‘Kangaroo care’ wins MPs’ award

LOCAL midwives have won an award after introducing a new way for mothers to look after premature and small babies who do not need neonatal in- tensive care. Kangaroo care, which the Downs Mail featured in a recent edition, is when a baby is car- ried “skin to skin” next to its mother.

Consultant midwife Sarah Gregson said: “Research into kangaroo care for premature ba- bies has shown that it can lead to a shorter hospital stay, more successful breastfeeding, less crying and more quiet sleep. We wanted to see if it would also work for the well premature

the name of its predecessor Somerfield, was shut down because of “poor trading per- formance”. Meanwhile, Sharon Music, which opened at 65 High Street in 1971, has also closed. Shop owner Clifton Williams said economic fac- tors, including the rise of in- ternet trading, had led to a decline in trade.

and small babies we care for.” After successfully trialling the system on the postnatal ward at Pembury, it was brought in at Maidstone Hospital. The midwives were named winners of the best postnatal care category by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Mater- nity.

The team have developed fairtrade KangaWraps in part- nership with Trade4Life, a not- for-profit organisation set up to support charities in the devel- oping world. A study about kangaroo care

was due to be published in the British Journal of Midwifery in September.

Midwives receive the award from Health Minister Ann Milton Tax rebate phone scam warning

POLICE are warning homeowners to be on their guard, following a number of hoax calls offering a tax rebate. Fraudsters have telephoned residents, including one in West Malling, addressing the person by name and claiming to work for HM Revenue and Customs. The homeowners were told they were due a rebate and that all

they had to do was pay an administration fee of £50 or £100. The victims were told they were owed £3,000 to £5,000 but for- tunately, all were suspicious and did not pay any money. A spokesman for HMRC said: “We only ever contact customers who are due a tax refund in writing by post.”
