Garden loos feel the squeeze!

THE public toilets in Brenchley Gardens are to be improved – by being made smaller. A council report on the scheme, costing almost £50,000, said:

“The proposal is not only to refurbish the toilets but also to greatly reduce their size, whichwill stop groups and individuals loitering.” It is all part of Maidstone Council’s plans to make the area more attractive. The number of visitors to the gardens has increased since im- provements there, and is likely to rise even more with the opening of the nearby museum’s EastWing extension. Most of the revamp will be funded with £30,000 from the devel-

oper of land at Waterside, Fairmeadow – a so-called S106 contri- bution. The report by parks manager Jason Taylor said reshaping theWC

In store soon – melons from Kent MELONS could become as typical a Kentish crop as strawberries, apples and cherries, following the first har- vest of a commercial trial at East Malling. The home-grown fruit was destined for Sainsbury’s su- permarkets throughout the South East. Thanks to this year’s warm spring, the trial, which in- cluded cantaloupe, galia and yellow honeydew varieties, grown in polytunnels and drip-irrigated, has shown that melons could be grown commercially in Kent on north- south facing slopes. The new crop is the result of a collaboration between

East Malling Ltd, the farm which is home to East Malling Research (EMR), and fruit and vegetable supplier Mack- Multiples. Chris Mallinson, head of science at EMR, said climate change had provided the opportunity to try something different. “Kent’s southerly warm location and summer climate, this year in particular, has closely mimicked Spain in the spring. Kent’s melons would hit the market as the volume and quality of Spanish ones is declining.”
