Bunker project continues despite funding blow

DESPITE narrowly missing out on the People’s Millions public vote for Big Lottery funding last year, Holmesdale Technology College and project partners are determined that the World War II air raid shel- ter on the school site will still be converted into a vibrant commu- nity resource. Known as The Bunker Project,

the aim is to create a bike and mo- torcycle workshop using the old building. Itwill be used during the school day by students needing to get to grips with practical engineer- ing tasks, while in the evenings and at weekends, members of the com- munity will be able to work on their own bikes and share their skills and knowledge with friends and family. Undeterred by the lack of funding, the school, Snodland Friends and Bikers Club and the Snodland Partnership are forging ahead with their plans. Over the August

Film festival for pupils LOCAL youngsters will again get a chance to go to the cinema free during National Schools FilmWeek. The festival, now in its 16th year, is supported by an online library of re- sources about each film. The programme at Maidstone Odeon, Lockmeadow, fromOctober 13 to 21, includes Kung Fu Panda, Social Network and Zookeeper. Amanda Wheatcroft, who teaches at Kingswood Primary School, near Maidstone, said: “Attending Film Week is a great introduction to story- telling, animation and art and can link to lots of subjects within the curricu- lum.” In all, there will be 2,500 screenings at 570 cinemas across the UK.

Bank Holiday weekend, volunteers cleared out the rotten desks and other rubbish that had accumulated and cleaned the ivy off the outside. Two skips were filled and removed. Project manager Sue Ricketts said: “I’m so grateful to everyone who helped over the weekend. It’s great to see the bunker all cleared out and ready for the next phase. We can really see what space we have to work with now. We’ve had a real sense of achieve- ment already. I know our plans will come to fruition eventually and I can’t wait.” The next phase will be to paint the inside

of the shelter and install new doors andwin- dows to make sure the building is both use- able and secure. The school has received many offers of practical help. Anyone wishing to be a part of the project should contact Sue via the school.
