Young wardens sign up to keep their play space spick and span
YOUNGSTERS on the Airfield estate near Kings Hill have signed up to become junior war- dens and keep the neighbour- hood clean after a £40,000 revamp of their play area. Russet Homes has transformed
the playground in Javelin Road, after young people complained there was nothing for them to do.
The refurbishment, which in- cludes new football goals and basketball hoops, means that children no longer have to cross the busy Malling Road to reach the nearest play area on the Kings Hill estate. Youngsters aged seven to 16
are being invited to join Russet’s new junior wardens scheme, an after-school project which aims to empower them to help make their neighbourhood cleaner, safer and a nicer place to live. During the six-week project,
they will attend talks from Ton- bridge andMalling Council and the police and fire and rescue service. Russet’s community develop-
ment officer, Marilyn Smith, said: “As youngsters asked us to improve the playground, we want them to take a leading role in ensuring the new equipment is well looked after.”
Their first task was to offi-
cially open the playground dur- ing their first meeting, and the tape was cut by Amelia Ashby and Richard and Caroline Spencer. Amelia (10) said: “I’ve lived
here for nine and a half years and the park has never been this good. It’s brilliant.” Russet, which owns around
100 homes on the estate, stepped in after youngsters raised their problemswith their MP Sir John Stanley. Mrs Smith said: “The views of
our young residents are really important to us and when we looked at this project we recog- nised the benefits it could bring to theAirfield estate community. “Previously, youngsters who wanted to play on a large variety of equipment had to cross a busy ‘A’ road to reach the only other playground in walking distance and, understandably, parents did not want them to make this journey alone.” Funding for the upgrade, which has provided a climbing frame and a special swing for wheelchair users, came from Russet’s sustainable communi- ties fund, topped up by £5,000 from Garfield Weston Founda- tion.

Community-minded youngsters are enthusiastic about the opening of their playground in Javelin Road following its £40,000 revamp, and plan to keep it looking good
Make waves in 2012 SWIMMERS are being urged to put a date in their diary for next year. More than 80 people took part in
this April's Swimathon at pools in Larkfield and Tonbridge. It raised £10,464 for Marie Curie Cancer Care and the Swimathon Foundation. Gary Littlejohn, gen- eral manager for Tonbridge Pool, said: "Both here and Larkfield Leisure Centrewill be running ses- sions on the weekend of April 28/ 29. I'd encourage others to take part in the 2012 event."
Drain before rain REPAIRS to a partially col- lapsed culvert at the junc- tion of Rochester Road and High Street, Aylesford, are scheduled for November. Kent Highways confirmed
the work is in the planning stage and has been given the highest priority. The parish council wel- comed this progress and hoped the scheme would be completed before too much heavy rain fell.
