NEW HYBRID SENSOR FROM OSRAM Osram Opto Semiconductors says its new 3-in-1 SFH

7773 digital sensor makes it easier than ever to install both proximity and ambient light sensing in smart phones and similar devices by combining the functions of a digital ambient light sensor and a digital proximity sensor in a single compact unit. It also simplifies the suppression of crosstalk by combining the emitter and detector chips. Now, designers no longer have to install a separate IR emitter to enable the proximity sensor function.

get the police involved because once he is arrested, I will not get the money until the judge finds him guilty. After that, the state will set up a payment plan for about $10 a month for the next 197 months, and I don’t want that as it is an interest-free loan, in my mind. ‘To Sir,With Love’ – and the Value of Mentoring (Posted Sept. 3, by Doug Holmes, former Penn State Director of Transportation)

I was coming home from the gym the other day and listening

to an oldies radio station. (I hate to admit it, but for me the music died a few years after Don McLean’s song “American Pie.”) The station was playing Lulu’s “To Sir, With Love.” If you have not experienced a school system where your “guid-

ance counselor” is one of your teachers assigned at the beginning of high school, it isn’t easy to really comprehend the full impact of the lyrics of that song. There is a strong bond created by the class and that teacher over the four or five years of secondary education.

Parking Today www.parkingtoday.com However, the one thing that clearly comes through with the

lyrics is that “Sir” (Sidney Poitier’s character Mark Thackeray) was far more than just a teacher in a public school to these kids. These teachers are true mentors, and over the years teach their classes many life lessons. What the heck does that have to do with parking? Simple. Any

of us in management roles need to be mentors to help bring along those who will follow us in a management capacity. Training and education are important, don’t get me wrong. The Certified Administrator of Public Parking (CAPP) pro-

gram, is, in my opinion, the best by far educational program in the industry, and I highly recommend it. The International Parking Institute and the University of Virginia partner to ensure the aca- demic integrity of the program. Penn State, for example, has three people with the CAPP cre-

dential on its roster, and a fourth will test this fall. But formal edu- cation is only part of the process. Hands-on mentoring from an experienced supervisor is the catalyst that brings out the true pro- fessional in any endeavor. As a mentor, you can bring home to all your staff – including

the ones you are grooming for promotion either at your place of employment or for someone else – the tools needed to run a quality program. We all are in the same industry and all of us are committed to advancing the profession. Take advantage of training opportunities
