IN BRIEF Marius Frank, CEO of curriculum development organisation ASDAN, has been recognised as the Most People-Focused CEO in the Public Sector at the prestigious HR Excellence Awards 2011. Mr Frank has only been in the role since September 2010, but has been with the internationally recognised awarding body, which offers programmes and qualifications that grow skills for learning and employment, for five years as a trustee. He was previously head teacher at Bedminster Down School in
Bristol.ASDAN grew out of research work at the University of the West of England in the 1980s and was formally established as an educational charity in 1991.

organised the event alongside Sounds Commercial and representatives from the tourism industry, said: “Over 200 nominations were received and the standard of entry was exceptional. Bristol should be proud of the outstanding quality of its tourism offer.”
Bristol Airport has been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard after taking action to measure, manage and reduce its carbon emissions by nearly four per cent. The Carbon Trust Standard recognises
organisations for real carbon reduction and is based on rigorous, independent assessment. Alan Davies, planning and environment
director, said:“We are delighted to have achieved the Carbon Trust Standard. This demonstrates how seriously we take our environmental responsibilities, and underlines the effectiveness of our efforts.”

AFL gets Nigeria online A
FL, a leading global manufacturer of fibre optic cable to the electric utility market, is supplying fibre optic cable and equipment to Nigeria’s first open access fibre optic backbone network. Nigeria’s National Broadband Carrier Network Project includes 14,000km of fibre optic network linked through regional network owners to enable advanced communications to all regions of the country. Network owner, Dangote Industries Ltd, is installing over 3,000km of fibre optic cable supplied by AFL to link to this open access backbone which is operated by Dancom Technologies and will interconnect directly
with Phase 3 Telecom. The Dancom network construction incorporates AFL’s SkyWrap solution, a fibre optic cable that is helically applied on existing ground or phase conductors using specially designed installation equipment. “AFL is honoured to participate in such an important project that will directly impact the lives of the people of Nigeria,” said Paul Thompson, managing director of AFL in Europe.
“Given the difficult terrains, wetlands and environments of the Niger Delta region where part of this installation is located, SkyWrap was the perfect solution for this project.”

The pier is currently enjoying its first summer season since its pavilion was destroyed in a devastating fire in 2008. Owners Kerry and Michelle Michael oversaw the £39 million rebuilding process, which has seen the addition of a number of attractions, including 500 games machines and 18 major rides (the previous pier had five). It initially reopened last October and is now one of the south west’s leading tourist attractions.
