The age barrier

Recruitment is not only about young people. There is also the important issue when making a decision about filling a vacancy of how to deal with an application from a candidate who appears to have too many qualifications or have more experience than a job requires. Lydia Bartlett, owner and director of Cute Resource Solutions, understands why some employers could be instinctively suspicious but argues that those candidates could prove an excellent selection if they have the right motivation. She said: “You must do everything you can to see beyond the simple black and white of the CV. The key is to challenge the applicant to fully understand their motivation. There are a range of reasons why a senior and experienced person might be a really good choice. For example they may have made a lifestyle choice in order to spend more time with a young family or to pursue an interest or hobby. They may have moved out of London to experience a better way of life in the countryside and they no longer want a job that means late nights in the office. “As long as the motivation is right they can provide excellent value for money for the business and their know-how and experience can also rub off on the rest of the team, which can help others develop to your advantage.”
