Katie Turrell picks the best of autumn’s cultural events
Get to know the unique romantic quality of Gordon Giltrap’s music at the Gulbenkian Theatre this month
Folk ways
This month’s mix takes a stroll through a range of genres to suit everyone’s tastes. The Gulbenkian Theatre offers the acoustic guitarist Gordon Giltrap on the 3rd September and folk frontiers Pentangle on the 24th. Tickets are between £14 and £16 and are available from the Box Offi ce on 01227 769075. If swing is your thing then the Theatre offers an evening with Jeff Hooper and his 16 piece swing band on the 9th (tickets £20).
If you fancy music and a drink or two, then there are two blues nights which are free entry. The Ballroom’s Tuesday Bluesday is (unsurprisingly) every Tuesday night and The Cricketers’ jazz and blues house band play every Thursday night.
Bits of opera Committee presents Cameo
The Marlowe Friends
Opera on 2nd September at the Gulbenkian Theatre which features performances from La Boheme, Porgy and Bess and Les Miserables among others. Tickets are £15 from the Marlowe Box
Offi ce on 01227 787787. Also at the Gulbenkian Theatre is The Seagull Effect on 23rd September. The play follows characters caught up in the 1987 storm in Britain. Tickets are £13 and can be bought from the Gulbenkian Box Offi ce on 01227 769075.
For something a little more
family orientated, the esteemed poet and former Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen is
performing at the Theatre Royal in Margate on 27th September. He collaborates with musicians in this show which forms part of the ‘Love Music Hate Racism’ movement. Rosen always puts on an energetic performance and audience participation will be involved. Tickets are £10 for adults and £6 for children from 01227 787787.
Laugh out loud
Everybody has a laughing place and this month that place should be the Gulbenkien Cinema and Theatre. The
Cinema’s selection this month includes Whiskey Galore, a
classic about native Scots during the Second World War coping with rationing, and satirical comedy from 1951, The Man in the White Suit.
Reginald D Hunter offers his stand-up show on the 21st (tickets £15). His show is likely to be controversial but offers an accurate and funny view. Tickets will be available on the day of the show from the box offi ce.
