happiest Your

day

With its rich orange colour palette and cooler temperatures, autumn is a romantic time to get married. And, because it’s off-peak season, it can be cheaper.

Our weddings expert (and soon-to-be bride!) Mandy Temple has all the practical info you need for a smooth-running, memorable day…

Budget

Agree a budget with your fi ancé. It’s far too easy to get swept away with the excitement of your engagement and planning, that you could be setting yourself up for disappointment, especially if you fall in love with a venue or dress you can’t afford. With a budget and forward planning you won’t feel the pinch as much.

Venue

There are so many beautiful venues in Kent that couples are spoilt for choice. Whether you are saying ‘I do’ in a castle, or opting for a traditional church wedding the options are endless. Your venue is one of the most important decisions and it’s one of the fi rst too. Firstly discuss the type of venue you want, secondly decide whether you want the ceremony and celebrations

Luke Goldsmith Jewellers Luke Goldsmith Jewellers opened its doors in April 2011 and is fast becoming the essential place to visit for your Engagement & Wedding rings for your big day. Luke has been handcrafting and designing truly exceptional wedding

under the same roof and lastly have a rough idea of how many guests will be attending. It’s now common for the guests to attend both the ceremony and the reception. If your venue limits the number of guests or your budgets are tight, you can invite close family and friends to your ceremony and the rest of your guests to the evening. Although autumn provides a beautiful backdrop, the weather is unpredictable, so your day will have to be well planned. If you’re hosting your wedding outside, make sure you’re able to move your party inside. Also check that the venue has outdoor heaters. Before you sign make sure you are 100% happy and ask for a full list of costings and charges.

Church

If you’re opting for a traditional church wedding remember

that the banns are a legal requirment: your priest or minister will read out your intention to marry, over three Sundays during the three months before the wedding. Although Saturday is the most popular day, you can get married in a church any day between 8am and 6pm. Wherever you decide to tie the knot you will need to give Notice of Marriage to your local register offi ce at least 15 days prior to your wedding date.

Civil Ceremony

Couples need to remember is that there is no religious aspect and you will have to book a registrar to marry you, which normally means an extra cost, unless you are getting married at a registry offi ce. Make sure that your chosen venue holds a license to marry you. Civil ceremonies are generally

more fl exible. Registry Offi ce ceremonies are short and last for 20 minutes.

The Dress

It’s vital to decide on a budget before you go dress shopping as the price range is vast and you don’t want to fall in love with a dress that is out of your league. Try on many different styles: lots of brides end up picking a dress that is the complete opposite style to what they fi rst imagined. You may also want to consider the type of ceremony, season or place you get married as this could play a vital role in your decision. If you’re getting married in the autumn or winter consider teaming up your dress with a fake-fur wrap, shawl, matching bolero or even a majestic velvet cape. Or consider velvet or a thicker duchesse satin to keep you warm or a dress with long sleeves. Book your appointments in advance as bridal shops and designers get booked up. You will also need to order your dress at least six months in advance and your bridesmaid dresses at least four months in advance.

Like many brides you may
