THE YOUNG PERSON’S HISTORY GUIDE TO
CANTERBURY

In 1536, after breaking away from Rome and declaring himself the Supreme Head of the Church of England, Henry VIII ordered the closure of all abbeys, monasteries and convents and seized their assets. He shut down St Augustine’s Abbey and the three friaries in Canterbury and put an end to the cult of Thomas Becket. However, he allowed the cathedral to continue as the Mother Church of the Anglican Communion.
