known as Core Network Services, which includes DNS, DHCP and IP address management. This is the layer between the application and the physical network, vital for the system to function but rarely discussed.
Should I move now? 10000011

There are advantages and disadvantages of being an early adopter of IPv6. Early adopters hit the steepest part of the learning curve, and lack of IPv6 migration experience means they’ll be the ones making the mistakes that later on people will be able to avoid. And as a new and unfamiliar protocol, IPv6 may have security loopholes that hackers are the first to discover. Early adopters will need to be more vigilant. However, the longer you wait, the more people will have moved to IPv6, and the more of your potential contacts and customers simply won’t see you, or have access to your goods and services. In addition, if the world economy takes off again, late adopters will be just beginning the migration process while the early adopters will be freer to mop up the opportunities.
Are people ready?
We conducted a market survey of 2,400 companies worldwide. We asked questions about readiness to move to IPv6. It was revealed that very few companies are ready to make the move. 80% of surveyed companies

don’t feel well enough educated to take on the challenge. They don’t like the uncertainty and don’t have a plan. 67% felt real concerned about the successful implementation of IPv6, willing to make plans to move but uncertain of the outcome. 40% of respondents still track the IP addresses they have manually, a clear indicator of IPv6 unreadiness. You cannot manage a hybrid environment using just Excel sheets. EMEA companies are slightly more ready than US companies; 22% of companies have a plan in place compared to 10% in the

USA. Nevertheless, the results of the survey still show that there is still much work to do to educate and reassure companies.
Preparing for migration
Companies don’t need to panic; IT team just needs to do some initial research, educate themselves, and develop clear migration and test plans for their devices and the whole system. Some key steps need to be considered: Core network services should be automated before starting. Security policies should be revised, because IPv6 security issue are not yet as known and documented as IPv4. Application compatibility with IPv6 must be checked, and before companies upgrade to new IPv6-compatible devices, they must assess their reliability. Finally, testing systems and troubleshooting tools should be checked. When it comes to the actual

migration process, first set up some form of IPv6 test methodology or service, so that nothing will be implemented before you have the means to test it thoroughly. Then make sure initially that your external services are IPv6 capable, so that any IPv6-only devices will be able to reach your website, e-mail, applications as readily as existing IPv4 users. Your core routing infrastructure must next be upgraded to handle IPv6 traffic – dual-stack upgrades to core and edge routers, end point devices and hosts. Where IPv6 can not yet be supported, create temporary IPv4 islands and use NAT (Network Address Translation, where old IPv4 addresses already in use elsewhere can be re-used inside your network) to allow your IPv6 devices to access them. With these in place, you have bought time to slowly migrate the applications, etc. out to the dual stack infrastructure as upgrades become available and practical. You don’t need to invest right now;

you just need to have a plan. IPv6 is here to stay, and those who aren’t ready will get left behind.
