Even before OM4 was a standard,
many companies bought OM4, although it wasn’t called this at the time. Dispersion compensated fibre may go down the same path. People are already very interested in the Signature Core. Some customers have already requested more information in order to deploy it. As the next generation higher speeds start getting deployed, the reaches start getting pretty short. For example, 10G is specified to 300m on OM3 but 40/100G is only specified to 100m. As you go to 40/100G, a large percentage of links come close to those maximum reaches, and therefore you may need a higher bandwidth fibre.
NE: How does this technology fit in with the development of Next Generation Ethernet?
RP: This technology will become more and more important as Next Generation Ethernet is introduced. 40/100G Ethernet is here now. I sit on the standards body, the IEEE, so I was part of the 40/100G standard. It was driven by companies who needed the bandwidth. Companies like Verizon in the USA had a problem and came to the IEEE requesting that we develop a standard. They had customers who wanted 10G links and they didn’t have the high speed backbone necessary in order to support all these 10G links to their customers. Moving forward, the problem is

optimum. It was a low risk solution, designed to use existing technology. You had ten different transceivers essentially arrayed together to get the 100G aggregate data rate. So you had an array of ten VCSELs and an array of ten detectors. This is very costly, and challenging to manufacture. However, 40G is only 4 lanes, and that’s a much easier transceiver to manufacture, and the cost of that will come down. Next Generation Ethernet will be four lanes of 25G, so the physical infrastructure will be the same for today’s 40G Ethernet and Next Generation 100G Ethernet.

The traditional method of fire protection of IT & electronic equipment is to totally flood the room with a gaseous fire extinguishant.
