Other Trial Presentation Tools I have also invested in a digital Elmo, a projector, and a
screen. Many courthouses have screens available but I bring my own in case there is some kind of problem. You should call the Court well in advance of trial to see if a screen or projector is available for your use. If it is, make sure you reserve it. Also make sure that you have a spare projector bulb in case yours conks out on you during the trial. For those of you who do not know what this is, an Elmo
is a document camera. It is expensive, but not ridiculously so. Te reason that the Elmo is so usefully is that it avoids the time and cost associated with producing trial exhibits. Any piece of paper or object can be placed on the Elmo and shown to the jury via the projector. I no longer have to send my staff out to Kinkos to make poster board exhibits which are unwieldy. I simply place the exhibit on the Elmo and it is projected on the screen many times larger than any blow up would be. Blown up that large, the jury has an easy time seeing it even from across the courtroom. An Elmo is also very effective for cross examination purposes as it enables you to place any page of a deposition that you may wish to cross examine a witness on in front of both the witness and the jury. By directing the witness and the jury's attention to the document itself, jurors who are better at comprehending the written word rather than the spoken word will have no trouble following along as the transcript is read. Furthermore, the Elmo lets you pick and choose what pages you will use for cross examination without having to be Nostradamus or blowing up each page of the deposition into poster board exhibits in advance of trial. Using the above available technology will go a long way
in leveling out the playing field when you take on the big defense firms.
