Servers What is a server? A server is nothing more than a
computer that sends data to multiple clients. You may have heard of the “server/client” relationship. Servers tend to be very powerful and robust computers that provide specific roles to the rest of the network. For instance, most law practices have a server specifically to run whatever practice management software they are using. In this case, the server acts as a central area for all of the data to reside as well as where the data processing takes place. It also manages how people access the data. Obviously you want to make sure that when one employee is accessing a case file, someone else cannot just jump in and make changes at the same time and create bad data. Te server helps to manage this. Ultimately, you want the server to handle most of the processing, and the PCs that access the server(s) to simply interact with them. Just like you have different employees who have different
work responsibilities, you may have different servers that have different computing responsibilities. Some of these include terminal services for remote access for additional offices or home users, email hosting and distribution, disaster recovery
in order to prevent downtime, Blackberry synchronization, backup management, security, website hosting, and a number of other services. Sometimes you can use one server to accomplish many of these tasks, and sometimes you need multiple servers to manage different responsibilities. Number of users, the quantity and type of data, and the technical requirements of the applications you are running help to determine how these machines are configured. Obviously determining how your servers run is
something that should be discussed with a professional. A server is like a glass. You can only fill it up so much before it overflows and crashes, or just runs slowly. Good IT design keeps all of these factors in mind before deployment. It is very difficult to fix a system that was not designed correctly up front. Furthermore, the systems that are designed properly tend to have less support costs and frustrations associated with them. I tend to recommend my customers seriously consider
purchasing equipment warranties, for servers in particular. Servers have a number of parts that could potentially fail, and if you are covered by a warranty, the manufacturer is going to be obligated to provide you with a replacement for that part in a very short period of time. Acquiring a power supply, a processor fan, a motherboard, or any other server specific part can sometimes be very difficult on short notice, without having a warranty in place.
