2011 Dance Council Scholarship Recipients Lauren Burns Gregory Hines Memorial Scholarship
Thirteen-year-old Lauren, began taking dance at age 4 when a pre-school volunteer noticed her dancing around the nursery on her tip toes. She participates in competition throughout the year and performs in many local area events. Lauren is interested in the entertain- ment industry and plans to add vocal and acting lessons to her already busy schedule.
Katy Roth Denise Gallagher Memorial Scholarship
Katy is sixteen and enjoys dancing, singing, and acting. She has been a member of Dana’s Studio of Dance for four years and also attends DFW Performing Arts Conservatory in Southlake, Texas. Through her affilia- tion with Artisan Centre Theatre, she has had parts in West Side Story and Les Misérables.
Kylee Hiney Dallas Summer Musicals Academy Scholarship
Kylee attends Richland College and has been dancing for 15 years. She credits the Magnolia Project for open- ing her eyes to the real world of dance. “I have always loved to dance, but at Magnolia I realized it was my true passion.” She chose to stay home to attend college so that she could continue training with Magnolia. Her goal is to continue her dance education at a university with a good dance program.
Daylee James Lyric Stage Musical Theatre Dance Scholarship
Currently a sophomore at Mount Pleasant High School, Daylee James started dancing at the age of three and has not stopped moving since. She performs jazz, ballet, hip hop and pom and has been a competing soloist for the last five years. She plans to finish in the top five per- cent of her high school class and apply to NYU to major in dance. We can plan to look for her on So You Think You Can Dance! someday.
Ani Mayo Lyric Stage Musical Theatre Dance Scholarship
Ani’s passion for dance started at the young age of 2 at McKinney Dance Academy. She has studied ballet, tap and jazz for 14 years, recently taking tap from Terry Wolter, 2010 DCNT Texas Tap Legend. She was chosen by Marvin Hamlisch to dance in his 2010 Christmas Show with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Ani hopes to grow her tap technique this summer by attending the Chicago Human Rhythm Project.
Whitney Robertson Denise Gallagher Memorial Scholarship
Whitney has been a competitive dancer for 15 years. She performs jazz, lyrical, contemporary, modern, ballet and novelty. She says, “Dance is my outlet, it helps me talk and express things without words, and I have been living and breathing dance for the greater majority of my life.”
Madyson Bauer Buster Cooper Tap Scholarship
Although Madyson’s favorite genre is tap, her passion for dance knows no boundaries. She has been a mem- ber of the Drawbacks Youth Tap Ensemble since 2008. Through DYTE she has learned tap history and worked with renowned choreographers. She is an honors stu- dent at Grapevine High School in Colleyville, Texas and a Sergeant of the GHS Belles Drill Team. She plans on college, a dance career and having a family.
Cassandra Cantu Gene Pflug Scholarship
Fourteen-year-old Cassandra is a member of the RPM Youth Tap Ensemble. She is a multi-disciplined dancer focusing on tap, ballet, jazz, contemporary, lyrical and musical theatre. She has received several awards as a tap soloist including Outstanding Showmanship and Choreography. An honor student at St. Luke, she plans to continue her tap training and dreams of sharing her passion for tap with future generations.
Karissa Royster Jackie Hunter Memorial Tap Scholarship
Karissa has a strong background in ballet, jazz, modern and for the past six years, rhythm tap. She is a member of the RPM Tap Ensemble under the direction of Barbara Phillips and was one of 3 other RPM members picked to perform in the 5th Annual Beijing International Dance Festival. She looks forward to continued opportu- nities and expanding her dance horizons.
Maddie Owens Margaret Rylatt Scholarship
Maddie says she danced before she could crawl! She discovered her love of tap at Dancendy’s in Sherman, Texas, and now studies with Dove Academy of Dance Arts. She can never wait for the next class to improve her technique and is convinced there is no other place she is happier. She plans to major in Dance Performance in college.
