2011 Dance Council Scholarship Recipients


Madi Hicks Natalie Skelton Scholarship


Madi is 14 years old and studies at Academy of Dance Arts in Allen, Texas. She has been awarded Teen Breakout Artist at Muvo and Teen Outstanding Dancer at NYCDA. Her goals are to continue her training, major in dance in college and perform as part of a contempo- rary company. She also hopes to teach and choreograph as well.


Cassidy Pinkston Darryl Sneed Memorial Scholarship


Cassidy is 16-years-old and has been dancing for 14 years. She enjoys learning new styles of dance, new ter- minology and working with various choreographers. Her future goals include going to a college to refine her dance skills and study business. After college, she would like to perform or open her own studio to teach dance arts to children.


Omar Humphrey Charles Andrew Kulp Scholarship


Omar is a 2011 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts where he performed with Repertory Dance Company I and the African Dance Ensemble. He recently performed in the Bruce Wood Dance Project. He attended the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre’s summer intensive and will attend the University of Oklahoma in the fall.


Nicole Rusli Glenda Brown Scholarship


Nicole is a senior company member of the Academy of Dance Arts and a company member of Dallas Repertoire Ballet. She is ballet trained in both Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) and Cecchetti, but her “true love” is modern and contemporary dance. Multi-talent- ed Nicole is a trained singer and has played violin for over 11 years. She hopes to become part of a modern or contemporary dance company.


Key’ Andrea James Darryl Sneed Memorial Scholarship


Darryl Sneed Memorial recipient: Key’Andrea James of Monroe, Louisiana, is a student at Grambling State University and member of their renowned Orchesis Dance Company. Most recently, she participated in Dallas Black Dance Theatre’s summer intensive and plans to further her dance studies by attending more workshops and intensives.


Sergio Tapia-Fikes Fred “Poppy” Ziaks Memorial Scholarship


Sergio started out as a vocalist at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, but knew he needed to know how to dance to be on Broadway. He had only been dancing for 3 months when he was accepted into the dance department at Booker T. He currently attends the NYU Tisch School of the Arts and will stay in the city this summer to attend The Movement Invention Project summer intensive.


Melissa McCann Point Park University Intl. Summer Study Scholarship (A)


When Melissa was little, she dreamed of a Broadway career. Now that she is 17, her goal is to make it as a professional dancer and live her life doing what she is passionate about. Her training has been in jazz, musical theatre, and contemporary ballet. She is also choreo- graphing her high school musical this year. Her goals are to attend a summer intensive, audition for college, and major in Dance.


Emily McDaniel Charles Santos Scholarship


Emily is a 2011 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. Recently, she was recognized with a Silver Award by the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts and was a nominated for Presidential Scholar in the Arts. Artistic Director of the Repertory Dance Company I, Lily Cabatu Weiss says, “Her passionate drive makes her an excep- tional dance student!”

McKinley Willis Tom Adams Scholarship


McKinley began her training at age 7 with Dallas Black Dance Academy where she is now a teaching assistant. She is a 2011 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School of the Performing & Visual Arts and performed with Repertory Dance Company I. She recently per- formed with the Bruce Wood Dance Project. In the fall, she will pursue college studies in Dance Performance, Choreography and Graphic Design.


Dalit Agronin Dallas Summer Musicals Academy Scholarship


Dalit began her journey as a dancer 13 years ago. She is a junior at Yavneh Academy in Dallas and a company dancer at the Magnolia Dance Project. She studies her craft 18 hours a week and focuses on ballet, pointe, jazz, modern, hip hop, conditioning, and contemporary tech- nique. Her favorite quote is “Confidence: It’s not who you are that holds you back, it’s who you think you are.”
