Men buy, women shop, but retail is about more than just buying and shopping.
The retail trade sector is the nation’s largest employer, with more than 14.4 million jobs in 2010, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statis- tics. Retail companies, or companies with significant retail operations, are expected to add at least a million new jobs, reaching 16.7 million by 2014. The sector will continue to be the dominant source of employment and the largest source of employment growth.
In this issue, WOC magazine brings together women from all facets of the retail world, ranging from up-and-coming entrepreneurs to national and multinational chains. Their stories of first-level managers, managing direc- tors, technical fellows, and vice/senior vice presidents make for attractive career ladders and lattices of high performance in a leading industry.
WOC magazine’s roster of “Top Women in Retail and Finance” feature women who run corporate finances, lead technology and operational ser- vices, and maximize growth and profits as they juggle work and family, in addition to civic duties. They show strong commitment to community and they make excellent role models for upcoming leaders in business, science and technology.
As part of their mission to meet human capital needs, enlightened corpo- rations are going a step further in satisfying their thirst for talent with in- novative use of corporate employee affinity groups. More and more, these resource groups have emerged as a staple of contemporary corporate life. WOC’s “Moving Forward Together” spotlights some of the best. “All of us, when we are juniors in our careers, can use someone to guide us through our career paths,” said Tammy Kantor, chief information officer for GE Aviation, a business unit of the 300,000-plus-employee General Electric Co.
As Women of Color magazine highlighted back in 2003: Achieving greater gender, racial, professional as well as cultural diversity means stretching minds, and cultures, to include diverse possibilities. Rosa “Rosie” Gumatao- tao Rios, a first-generation Mexican American, is the 43rd and current Trea- surer of the United States. She sat down with Women of Color magazine to share her insights on the U.S. economy, women in finance, as well as her role in promoting financial literacy and education.
Women of Color magazine remains devoted to showcasing significant achievements in the information technology workforce. This issue, like WOC’s debut edition, provides a portrait of women on the move, work-life balance, talent acquisition and other challenges in the world of business, industry, government and academia.
