Of her work, Hallal says, she’s always had a passion for commercial real estate financing and enjoys helping business owners reach their dreams. “I also encourage women to never fear trying—every woman has a unique talent, and it’s important to nurture those skills,” she says.

The success of Renuka Patel shows how determination and skill can be rewarded, as during more than16 years with Union Bank she has gained increasing responsi- bility and risen up the corporate escalator. She was appointed to her current post in 2010. She had been regional manager and SVP of Northern California; now, from her Fresno office, she oversees 53 branch offices of the Community Banking group in Central California.
Prior to Union, she worked at Millennium Bank and Wells Fargo. The veteran banker sees California’s youth as a new client group, and is excited about recent opening of Union Bank’s first student-run branch at McLane High School in Fresno. She also advises women interested in banking as a career to become tellers while in school, and once they graduate college to enter a banking training program. When not on the job, Patel is in the community. She has served on the board of the Sacramento Urban League and has been a member of the Rotary Club and Kiwanis. Patel earned a general certificate of education degree from University of Oxford, England and is a graduate of the Pacific Coast School of Banking.
Retail and finance offer women a plethora of opportunities. Current economic challenges, combined with advancements in technology, present women with the right education and experience a stimulating environment in which their talents can shine.
Preciado is a veteran banker, having worked in the financial sector for more than 20 years before joining Union Bank in October 2010. Preciado, who entered banking right after college, says she was attracted initially by the prospect of helping people build their financial futures; now she also enjoys how “over-
seeing branch offices is much like running your own busi- ness.” Before being hired by Union, Preciado spent 21 years at Wells Fargo, where she served as national sales manager for the affluent market segment, and was regional president for retail banking. In her present post, she has a team of 207 employees, five direct reports and responsibility for Union Bank’s Priority Banking programs, retail specialized services, and the Branch Banking Sales and Services programs. Preciado is a firm believer in encouraging diversity. Through- out her career, she has been on the boards of a variety of organizations that support and mentor women, including Asian-Pacific Islanders, on issues ranging from general health awareness to becoming a successful working mother. She says, “I also provide advice to women regarding starting a business and the most effective ways of working with your banker.”
Rosalind G. Brewer

Rosalind Brewer has gone from the lab to the boardroom with aplomb. Currently, she leads the east geographic business unit of Walmart U.S., overseeing nearly 1,600 stores spanning from Maine to Puerto Rico. She is responsible for establishing the strategic direction of all growth opportuni- ties including store innovation, people development, supply chain, and real estate. Before joining
Walmart, she worked for Kimberly-Clark Corp., where she started as a scientist in non-woven technology and product development. In 2004, she ascended to vice president of the global non-wovens sector, where her efforts succeeded in growing sales by more than 30 percent. Ms. Brewer devotes her energies to a myriad of organizations. She has been a
