ummer has arrived, and this year’s season has been complicated by all sorts of disaster, both natural and manmade. It is at times

like these we all must make a decision: do we succumb to the tensions of an unrelenting world or do we seek the positive in all we see and do? The choice is simple—love or fear. I choose love, always, because it is the only path that really leads anywhere worthwhile. It is my intention for my local edition of Natural Awakenings to lead us there. Please join me. This month’s theme, Living Simply, resonates

strongly with me. If your life is anything like mine, there are days when you find yourself with a to-do list that no single person can realistically

accomplish. When I have overcommitted and overextended myself, I typically arrive at a point when I have nothing left to give to anyone. Reading through this issue, I am reminded of my life’s many amazing experiences and adventures and why I cherish them. I have also been reflecting upon how, if we allow ourselves to become overwhelmed with responsibilities, we can miss what really matters; the simple things, and sharing simple pleasures with others; the most cherished of which are my time and my faith in God. Here’s to a world where being trumps doing! As of now, I vow to generate

fewer to-do lists and more to-be lists. This resonates with me because it’s my heart’s great desire to share more of myself, my faith and my time with others. As the publisher of a monthly magazine, I have many demands on my time and the desire frequently outstrips my ability to deliver on this promise to myself, but I won’t let that stop me from trying to give more of myself to others and to helping achieve a shared, sustainable planet. I hope you enjoy Natural Awakenings’ focus on the simplicity of summer and make the most of our Independence Day celebrations. Speaking of summer, don’t miss our feature, “Sweet Cool Treats to Beat

the Tucson Heat,” by Catharine Sutherland. After you finish reading about the Prickly Pops! that come in wild and heirloom Sonoran Desert flavors like mesquite and saguaro fruit, as well as mango, melon, and watermelon; the virtues of Isabella’s Ice Cream and their 1927 Model T delivery system; and visit Allegro Il Gelato Naturale for some scrumptious authentic Italian gelato, you’ll be hot-footing out to please and soothe your palpitating palate. It’s all natural, of course. As always, we thank our advertisers and distributors for their support that

makes Natural Awakenings possible. Please say thank you by shopping their stores and services. And let us know how we’re doing by writing us at Holly@ naturaltucson.com.

Sincerely, Holly Baker, Publisher
