OUR STORY

The Weirs Times was first published in 1883 by Mathew H. Calvert. The newspaper, then named Calvert’s Weirs Times and Tourists’ Gazette, was published until Mr. Calvert’s death in 1902.

One of the most remarkable features of the publication was a map of Lake Winnipesaukee which occupied the center spread of the paper. Readers will find the same map reprinted on the center pages of this, and every issue.

The new Weirs Times was re-established in 1992 and strives to maintain the patriotic spirit of its predecessor as well as his devotion to the interests of Lake Winnipesaukee and vicinity.

GOOD STUFF

Locally owned for over 19 years, this publication is devoted to printing the stories of the people and places that make New Hampshire the best place in the world to live. No, none of the daily grind news will be found in these pages, just the good stuff.

Governor Made It Worse

To The Editor: Lost in the commentary

of passing the state bud- get was the fact that, for the first time in recent history, not only does the budget affect and support the coming biennium, but it also closes the gover- nor’s “red ink” gap for the current biennium. As if the current budget were not difficult enough we had to bail out Gov. Lynch and the previous Dem- ocratic majorities from their deficit of the last two budgets. Gov. Lynch actually at-

tended the committee of conference on the budget and admitted to legislators that this year’s budget was so deeply in debt that there was, “not enough money in the Rainy Day Fund to balance the bud- get for the fiscal year end- ing on June 30th.”

Since

there wasn’t enough mon- ey left to bail the governor

out of his mess, the legis- lature added a section to the budget to provide the necessary funding to end the year with a balanced budget. Once again, this development went unre- ported in the media. It should also be noted

that Republicans took steps to restore to the budget many items that Gov. Lynch took out, such as funding for the de- velopmentally disabled waitlist. He cut all school construction aid pay- ments. In fact, the state still owes $540 million to our towns over the next 30 years for construction projects funded before the school construction aid program was suspended in the last biennium. We put that funding back in the budget and we made sure that our towns and school districts were held harmless. It is critically important

to bear in mind anytime you hear Gov. Lynch say that “we could do better”

in our budget that he is not only the problem criticizing the solution but he actually made the problem worse as it was being fixed.

Call Your Reps

To The Editor: I don’t understand why

first term state Represen- tative Tim Copeland from Stratham and Frank Case from Nottingham voted “NO” on the Right to Work bill? The Right to Work (RTW)

bill is part of the Repub- lican platform and the Democrats oppose the RTW bill. Why would the Honorable Mr. Copeland and Mr. Case support the Democrat platform? Don’t they know that the union membership represents less than 10% of those voting in their district? The 22 RTW states have

seen impressive job growth while the 28 other states have been losing jobs. Boeing is investing heav-

ily in RTW South Carolina and will initially create 1,000 new jobs, Mercedes Benz has invested in RTW Alabama and has created 10,000 jobs, and RTW Texas has added 37% of all new jobs in the US dur- ing the last decade. Is there any other single

issue that provides such a stark contrast between the results of Democrat and Republican policy? Please call Tim Copeland 603-580-1998 and Frank Case 603-895-2718 and tell them to vote to over- ride the Governor’s veto on the Right to Work bill.

Rally Around The Flag

To The Editor: Once again, I am com- pelled to address the des- ecration of our flag by those who do not com- prehend the meaning of the U.S. flag. Our flag is the symbol of freedom and democracy in this country, and around the world. It epitomizes what our military personnel de- fend and rally around. It is sacred and must not be desecrated. Unfortunately, the U.S.

Supreme Court in 1989 ruled it is legal to des- ecrate the flag under the First Amendment of our Constitution’s right of free speech. The U.S. House of Rep-

resentatives will consid- er H. J. Res. 13 shortly, which prohibits the physi- cal desecration of the flag. A parallel resolution, S.J. Res. 19, will go before the U.S. Senate in coming months. Two thirds ma- jority votes in the House and Senate are required to put forward a consti- tutional amendment for ratification by the states. Please contact your

state representatives and senators and ask them to support these resolutions. Over 1,200,000 U.S. mili- tary personnel have died promoting freedom and democracy in the world, and our flag is the sym- bol that represents this country. We have to rally around the flag.
