VOSE SPUR-BUSHWHACKING WITH BUGS I told Charlie on Sun-

day morning I would like to make a dent on my New England Highest Hundred list this summer and I’d like to finish the New Hampshire peaks. We agreed to trade some bushwhacking with me for some rock climbing with him. Vose Spur off the Carri-

gain Notch Trail seemed like a good thing to do with a late morning start. At 10:30 am we parked at the Signal Ridge Trail- head on the Sawyer River Road (Crawford Notch south). The black flies were so thick it was dif- ficult to stand still long enough to spray stinky bug dope on. We followed the Signal

Ridge Trail for 1.7 miles and then went right on the Carrigain Notch Trail for about 2 miles until we came to the big rock where it is rumored to be a good place to jump in the woods. We headed up to the east ridge of Vose Spur and every time we thought we found a herd path it disappeared. Even though it was very warm we wore long sleeve shirts and pants in an attempt

I believe in Trail Magic! We met Keith and Stacy and their dogs on the far end of the Nancy Pond Trail deep in the Pemigewasset Wilderness. Keith gave us the key to his truck so we could drive back to our car and leave the truck at the Signal Ridge Trailhead where they’d be exiting the next morning. We all saved three miles of road walking. (Notice the dogs are wearing backpacks carrying their own food.)

not to get scratched up. Charlie even wore glass- es to protect his eyes. We moved quickly trying to keep a head of the bugs. We just kept climbing up and heading slightly

to our right pushing our way through scrub and trees. Not until we reached

the talus field where we noticed a small cairn at the upper far left corner did we find a true herd path. From the rocky opening we enjoyed a fine vista to the southeast but we could only stand to stop long enough to re-apply the bug spray. The herd path wasn’t easy going because it was now very steep and there were still plenty of blow-downs to crawl and tramp around but isn’t that the fun of bush- whacking We found the canister

high up on a tree above a Vose Spur sign. We pulled the book out and quickly flipped through it. The most recent visi- tor was just at the end of May--I can’t remember
