COMMUNITY CHURCH MEDITATIONS IN AWE OF GOD’S CREATION

by Pastor Paul R. O’Neil Contributing Writer

In New Hampshire, we

can see and admire the beauty and splendors of God’s creation during all the four seasons but I especially like summer. When I am outdoors, I look at endless variety of nature such as the many species of wild life, vegeta- tion, and land forms and marvel at what my creator has made. The first verse in the

entire Bible begins with this simple statement. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth -- only ten words which tell us tell us of our begin- nings. Scientists use mil- lions upon millions to try to disprove this. Yet the best they can do is come up with is “theories” but no evidence to the con- trary.

Throughout the uni-

verse, God’s fingerprints or DNA are everywhere. Consider this: A house testifies there was a builder. A suit tes-

tifies there was a tailor. A porcelain jar testifies there was a sculptor. A cabinet testifies there was a carpenter. A painting testifies there was an art- ist. A crystal chandelier testifies there was a glass- maker. Our universe tes- tifies there is a creator. The account of our ex-

istence that we have in Genesis is brief. It was thought out, it was willed and it was realized by God. The book of Genesis

does not answer all of our questions. We don’t know if our earth was created in six literal 24 hour days or six periods of time, but it doesn’t really matter. What is important is that we believe that there is an intelligent being that created all that we see. Can blind chance create symmetry, rhythm, light, color, melody, mathemat- ics or order? I think it highly unlikely. In an article entitled,

pointed out how advanced God’s creation is over hu- man invention. For ex- ample: Before we discovered

and harnessed electric- ity, electric eels gener- ated their own up to 700 volts.

Before we invented elec-

tric lights, fireflies flashed their signals. Long before we learned

to navigate the seven seas, birds traveled from the Artic to Antarctic, where they landed at the same nesting sites year after year.

Before we designed and

built suspension bridges, God’s spiders demonstrat- ed engineering feats of amazing brilliance. Bird nests display a high

level of skill in masonry, weaving, tunneling, and the structural strength necessary to build them. Bees with their wings, air-condition their hives. Beavers build large dams out of trees and mud. Wasps manufacture a type of paper. Bats can dart around a

dark room without strik- ing a single thread be-

cause they emit super- sonic sound pulses. While humankind has

discovered, invented, de- signed, developed, cre- ated, and built modern technological marvels, God’s creations surpasses all.

Theologian David Be-

lasco wrote many years ago. When God conceived the world that was poetry. He formed it and that was sculpture. He colored it and that was painting. He peoples it with liv- ing beings and that was the grand divine eternal drama. The best way we can ver-

ify the existence of God is to allow Him to come into our lives. I realize that the beauty of creation cannot convert a closed mind. Only the power of the Holy Spirit can awaken faith in the One who set the universe in place. Life is not measured by the ac- cumulation of things. It is not measured in days or years, but a relationship with God. In New Hampshire, we

can marvel at God’s cre- ation on a daily basis.
