In a time of cutbacks, stressed economies, layoffs and outright busi- By signs of hope, related to this industry, I mean the prospect
of new dollars flowing into and through the various businesses that define us. By glimpse of recovery, I mean true growth.
Since the Air Medical Transport Conference last fall we have noticed
a number of things that can only be viewed as positive for the rotorcraft market. Not the least of which are the numerous announcements of new aircraft purchases, both civil and military. Each of the big ones, the Original Equipment Manufacturers, are seeing orders for new aircraft, at an increased rate, with much more frequency.
That, coupled with growth in the
Emergency Medical Services business sector, is encouraging indeed. Now, if the Obama Administration would move in a decisive direction on deep- water drilling in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, we may be able to enjoy a bit of recovery in the offshore market as well.
some movement on that by early fall – I remain hopeful. It’s ALEA time! New Orleans in July! I can’t think of a better place
to gather and get the latest information and gossip in the Law Enforcement side of our industry. Well, maybe someplace a little cooler and less humid. Note to ALEA, Minneapolis is a great summertime conference destination.

In this, our ALEA issue we are very proud to bring a trio of articles,
which profile three distinctly different law enforcement agencies. Contributing Editor Steve Goldsworthy brings us an up close look at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Aero Bureau. Quite possibly the largest aviation law enforcement outfit in North America, Steve gives us an in depth look into their day-to-day operations. In a new twist we pres- ent an article by Caterina Hessler, which profiles the workday of a German Polizei pilot. We are especially proud to publish Caterina’s work and look forward to her being a regular contributor.
Recently we had the opportunity to spend a day in the field with the Alabama State Troopers Aviation Unit.
And finally, we have another installment of Rotorcraft Ride Along. I’d like to thank the Alabama
Department of Public Safety for allowing us an exclusive look at the unique capabilities of this remarkable group of people.
