Lunchware that Saves Money and the Planet

n entrepreneur at heart, Lara Osborn, owner of Green To Go, used the Internet to cre- ate a business she could manage from home. As a new mom, the former animal trainer sought products she could sell part-time, leaving precious hours to devote to her young daughter. “It wasn’t feasible any longer for me to train animals on movie sets, because of the demanding schedule,” says Osborn. She was excited about buying and per- sonally testing the Earth- friendly lunch ware products that she now sells online and at the Solana Beach Farmers Market and South Cedros Avenue’s Leaping Lotus. “I was even more excited that they were child- friendly, because it meant I could prac- tice niche marketing and promote ‘zero trash lunches’ to parents and schools,” Osborn advises. cloth napkins—items that all reduce the average schoolchild’s lunch trash. “It’s amazing that in one year, 67 pounds of lunch trash, from one child, ends up in a landfill,” notes Osborn. Teaching children to reduce and reuse starts at home, and parents who take their lunch to work can model the behavior. An added benefit for adults is the money they save by not purchasing plastic baggies, paper bags and juiceboxes. “It’s cheaper to buy bulk food items, rather than indi- vidually wrapped grocery products,” enthuses Os- born, who also offers the


lunchware through home parties and as PTA fundraiser items. The piéce de résistance for Os-


born was when she realized that she could offer young children a way to feel good because they were helping the environment.
