Spitfire display heralds completion of clock tower

T

he skies above The Rolls of Monmouth Golf Club became the spectacle of a Spitfire

display as the Second World War aircraft helped pay tribute to Rolls- Royce co-founder Charles Stewart Rolls. The Rolls Royce powered Spitfire’s

appearance signified the completion of the restoration project on the Hendre mansion house’s 1830s clock tower, which was completed as part of the centenary celebrations of the death of Charles Rolls. The Hendre was once the

childhood home of Charles Rolls and is now the clubhouse of The Rolls of Monmouth Golf Club. The Second World War fighter

plane, flown by test pilot for Rolls Royce Phill O’Dell, is one of the last of its kind and treated the invited guests to a five-minute aerial display.

Engineers from the Rolls Royce

shadow works team carried out the work on the clock tower along with other companies who are all involved in work for Rolls Royce. Mead Scaffolding RHC lifting

replaced the oak beams donated by JA Group, Whitechapel bell foundry tuned the bells and the Cumbria Clock company restored the clock face. As thanks for their hard work a

copy of an 1890s watercolour painting of the building was given to each of the workmen involved in the project by Linda Kedward, manager of The Rolls Golf Club. Roger James, community relations

manager for Rolls Royce in Bristol thanked everyone involved in helping to get the clock restored saying, “this will be a lasting legacy in his ancestral home,” adding “and should be good for another 200 years.”
