Y Giving notice
ou are legally required to give notice of your intention tomarry or register a civil partnership in time to allow your intentions to be made public for at least 15 clear days before
the ceremony. For Church of England ceremonies, this requirement is covered by the reading of the banns on three consecutive Sundays. For marriage ceremonies in any other religious buildings, at an approved venue or in a register office, you both need to attend your local register office in person with documentation which proves your identity, nationality and residence in the district for at least seven days (see documents required, opposite). If you live in the same area, you must attend the register office together, otherwise each of you must separately attend your local register office. You can, of course, marry in a completely different area of England and, in that case, you should also contact the register office for the district in which you plan tomarry. Do remember that you must both attend the register office in person, no-one else can do it on your behalf.
Immigration controls Everyone who wants to marry or register a civil
partnership in this countrymust prove their nationality
and if either or both of you are subject to immigration controls you must both attend a designated register office together. In Berkshire, both Reading and Slough are designated register offices. You will need entry clearance (usually a visa) or the written permission of the Home Secretary (a Certificate of Approval), unless you fallwithin specified groups, for instance, having settled status in the UK (indefinite leave to remain). For more information, see documents required on opposite page.
Residence requirements You need to have lived in a registration district for at
least seven days immediately before giving notice of marriage. There are a fewexceptions, which apply only if neither of you is subject to immigration controls, and as long as one of you is resident in England orWales. If one of you is a British or Commonwealth citizen living abroad in specified countries, he or she may be able to give notice in the country in which they are living. If one of you is living in Scotland, he or she may give notice there. Officers, seamen or marines on board one of Her Majesty’s ships may give notice to the ship’s captain or commanding officer.
There is a fee for giving notice of your intention to marry or register a civil partnership – currently £33.50 per person – and you will be asked to produce certain documentary evidence, detailed opposite.
