• All that I am, I give to you. All that I have, I share with you. I promise to give you my love and friendship, to be there for you when you need me, to comfort and support you. I promise to respect you and be faithful always.

• As I take you to be my wife / husband / partner, I promise to honour and respect you. I will stand by you and be true to you always. I will care for you, laugh with you when you are happy, comfort you when you are sad. Whatever life may bring, I will always love you.

L

egally any marriage or civil partnership can be contracted by making a few simple declarations and short vows – and everything can be done and dusted inside

five minutes. In reality, most couples want to savour the moment, invest the ceremony with meaning and dignify the life-changing commitment they are making to each other. Civil ceremonies in register offices are normally relatively brief and restricted to 15 or 30 minutes,

which will allow you to introduce your own individuality into the occasion. Civil ceremonies at licensed venues are more flexible, have fewer time constraints and so allow for more use of your ownmusic and choice of readings. Do remember, however, that the law does not permit any religious connotations in the vows, music, poetry or readings. The exact content of your ceremony is at the discretion of the registrar, so make sure everything is checked and cleared by them well before your wedding day.
