hen you go to give notice of your intention to marry or register a civil partnership, you need to provide the superintendent registrar with proof of your name, age, nationality and address. If you have been married before or registered in a previous civil partnership,
you will also have to show proof of the legal ending of that relationship. And if you are subject to immigration controls, you will need to provide documentation showing that you have the necessary clearance tomarry. All of the documents required must be originals, photocopies will not be accepted.
Everyonemust produce: Evidence of identity – for instance a driving licence, student or work ID card. Evidence of nationality – ideally a passport, but if you don’t have one, a full birth certificate (and your mother’s birth certificate or passport if you were born after 1982). Evidence of address – for instance a bank statement, rent agreement or utility bill, whichmust be recently dated or currently valid.
If you have beenmarried or registered a civil partnership before: Evidence that you are now legally free to contract a new relationship – a divorce decree absolute or a final order of civil partnership dissolution, bearing the court’s original stamp; or, if a former husband,wife or civil partner has died, the death certificate.
If you are subject to immigration controls: Evidence of entry clearance granted specifically so you canmarry in the UK – this is normally shown as a visa in a passport or travel document and is issued by the British Embassy or High Commission in the holder’s home country. Or Evidence of the written permission of the Home Secretary tomarry in the UK – normally in the formof a Certificate of Approval forwhich you should apply through the Home Office.
These restrictions do not apply to: • British citizens • Citizens of countries which aremembers of the European Economic Authority
• Foreign nationals who have been given indefinite leave to remain in the UK
• Members of visiting forces fromNATO and Commonwealth countries
• Diplomats not subject to immigration controls
And finally... While the minimum legal age at which you can get married is 16, registrars may ask for parental consent forms for anyone under the age of 18.
