6 | Bed & Breakfast News | May/June 2011 News from the Bed & Breakfast Association

The first member (from Knaresborough, North Yorkshire) joined the Association on 29 April 2006, so the Association is now just over five years old. At the time of writing, we’ve just had our 1,260th membership signup – a B&B from Buxton, Derbyshire. And we are growing fast…

What with our “5th birthday”, our official award in 2010 as the best trade association in Britain at representing its members, and of course Bed & Breakfast News magazine joining us a couple of months ago, it is a good time to report to our members and readers on our plans for 2011, and for the future.

Our objectives are to “inform, support and represent” our members, and so far our major focus has been in informing members about regulations and other business issues, and representing their views to Government. Here we have had some successes, notably in persuading the Government to shelve the “bed tax”, and in the publication by the Westminster and Scottish Governments of new and much less onerous guidelines for the fire regulations for small B&Bs. The Scottish Government even released official figures, showing that the resulting reduction in cost burden on Scottish B&Bs alone was £100 million (if the same savings held true UK-wide, that would have saved all British B&Bs some £428 million).

Alastair Sawday (below), chairman of Alastair Sawday Publishing, says “What to do when the Health and Safety or Environmental Health people get going on B&Bs? It is a constant threat and I can think of no better support system than that provided by the Bed & Breakfast Association. There are numerous other benefits, among them: savings on credit card processing, guidance on legal issues, discounted tickets to West End shows, and an inside track on new regulations. You have enough to do cooking breakfasts and making beds without having to spend hours understanding regulations. Let the Association take the strain!”
