hat is it that comes to your mind when you think of the word “wellness?” Your age and gender can affect your answer to this question, just as one’s profession can color perspective. However, no matter what your age, gender or profes- sion, everybody has the ability to craft a well-lived life. Wellness is actively making choices that help to create and sustain a healthy, positive and success- ful state of well-being. Below are sev- eral factors to consider when thinking about lifestyle and how it contributes to better quality of life.


Healthy Children


Wellness, including physical fitness and freedom from pain, should start early in life with an approach to balance in our lives and continue throughout the life spectrum. School age children should be monitored for obesity, backpack fit, scoliosis and repetitive stress injuries (both from sports performance as well as computer/video games and texting). Too many children are carrying back- packs that are far too heavy for their bodyweight. Backpacks should be no more than 10-15 percent of their body- weight with the weight evenly distrib- uted between both shoulders.


Healthy Family


Family activities help foster improved relationships as well as promote a foundation for a healthy lifestyle – this can include indoor activities such as Wii-Fit or even Dance-Dance Revolu- tion. Have fun and participate in your children’s activities. The proper fit of your bicycle also helps to prevent joint pain and injury, so be sure to check this as your children grow.


Healthy Beginnings Good quality of life begins in the womb. Pregnancy and delivery can compromise our physical and emo- tional balance with low back pain, post-partum depression, pelvic pain and possible incontinence. Many of these are easily avoided or corrected with proper positioning or exercises. Maintaining a stress-free environment in which your baby will grow is not always as easy as it sounds, but can be achieved with the proper information.


Healthy Workplace As we enter the workforce there are also ergonomic positions to take into consideration, such as the height of the desktop proportionate to seat height, and computer stations designed to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome. Even getting up and moving if you are seated at a desk for most of the workday will help prevent injury as well as improve your motivation and performance throughout the day.


Healthy Aging


Ensuring that our homes are safe as we age, preventing falls by limiting throw rugs in the home, maintaining appropri- ate blood pressure levels, attending an- nual vision checkups, and maintaining physical fitness are all important factors to take into consideration.


HEALTHY FEET


Don’t forget to take good care of your feet as well. Many of us wear high heels or well-worn shoes that are just too comfortable to discard. However, these types of shoes can contribute to foot, knee or back pain.


Healthy Balance


Bringing balance to your life at every age is possible when you look at the overall picture, and maintain a healthy and positive outlook. These are just a few of the details to take into consid- eration with regard to our physical, mental and emotional status for injury prevention and stress reduction – all geared to promote wellness and bal- ance at any age.
