Designed by Sir Aston Webb this magnificent building, set in 126 acres of parkland dominates the skyline overlook- ing the beautiful and historic town of Dartmouth.
Cobbaton Combat Collection
KHAKI and olive drab predominate in this collection of military vehicles, mostly of WW2 vintage, which celebrates being open to the public for 30 years this year.
This off the beaten track collection is the result of one man’s lifetime of collecting anything World War Two. Three Romney hangars are home to over 60 mainly British and Canadian vehicles, including a 1944 Churchill Mk VII Crocodile Flamethrower Infantry Tank, armoured cars, trucks and personnel carriers. There are two 25 Pdr. field guns and a 17 Pdr. anti-tank gun, all restored and displayed in combat condition.
Amongst all that hardware are thousands of smaller items, from mortar shells to rationbooks, machine guns and gas masks. Displays of uniforms, kit and equipment show aglimpse of allied soldiers’ life during the 1939-1945 period. Items from other conflicts include personal weapons and equipment from WW1, an Argentinean gun and Mercedes jeep from the Falklands War, and a Centurion tank from the First Gulf War.
The collection spreads far beyond military vehicles and equipment, with another
building
housing the Wartime Home Front displays. The civilian’s world of ARP Wardens, Bomb Disposal, National Fire Service, Home Guard, Land Girls, WVS, evacuees, food rationing and coupons.
In the surplus and souvenir shop you can find
new and used combat clothing, unusual collectors’ items, deactivated guns, inert ammunition, survival and outdoor equipment, badges, toys, souvenirs and occasionally a vehicle for sale.
A Fordson 7V NAAFI canteen truck serves hot and cold drinks and snacks during the main season, and there is a large free car park and picnic area. The site has disabled access and facilities.
On the weekend of 13-14 August we will hold our annual ‘Cobbaton Combat VJ Weekend’ here – a gathering of military vehicles, enthusiasts, living history groups and collectors to commemorate Victory over Japan Day – the real end of the Second World War, and to remember the “‘Forgotten Army’ of the Burma Star. Entry to the show is free, 10am to 5pm.
Cobbaton Combat Collection is situated approximately seven miles south east of Barnstaple, and is signed from all directions.
