‘Must see’ Dawlish Museum!

THE ‘must see’ displays this year at Dawlish Museum include ‘All About Dawlish’ which charts the town’s history and growth.

A floor to ceiling map dated 1987

shows Dawlish and all the surrounding area before many of today’s buildings were conceived, together with other maps and photographs. The Charter for Dawlish given by Charles I in 1637 together with the authority for the town to hold a produce market in 1828 is also a main feature. Sports of all kinds are shown in black and white photographs, many bringing back memories. Did Dad play football or Grandad play darts? Come and see who you know. Alongside are displays relating to the Carnival, Violets, Bridge House and the Black (and white) swans of the town. In the library, we have a tribute to Piper Bill Millin, who passed away last August. It not only features him as the D-Day hero but also Bill the family man in later life. By request the Book of Condolence will remain open during this season.

Rooms dedicated to the Industrial past of Dawlish, an early 1900s kitchen and agricultural implements including the vicious Man Trap are all on the ground floor.

The first floor is extremely child-

friendly, Noah’s Ark is another new display in the Dolls Room while the Toy Room is now dedicated to boys toys and collectable annuals.

The ‘dressmaker’ continued to work

in the Victorian Parlour, the photographs of the Guide Dogs sponsored by the Dawlish Dog Training

School are

displayed in the Railway Room. Don’t miss the Porcelain Room which houses fine examples of Devon pottery, coronation souvenirs, the beautiful State Coach crafted by a local model maker and the 1845 Broadwood Square piano.

On the top floor the tableau depicts a General Store at the time of WWII with its restriction and rationing – it sells absolutely everything. Alongside is a typical bedroom for an evacuee with her few belongings. Dawlish played host to many hundreds of evacuees during that conflict.

The Museum is run entirely by

volunteers and receives no government funding. As it costs us approximately £20 per day to service the Museum there is an admission charge of £2 for adults and £1 for children and concessions.

Please come and see us soon. WELCOME TO DEVON!!!

Dartmouth Trips Across The Bay

There is the ‘Exe Estuary Trail’ which is a mainly flat route from Dawlish all the way to Exeter - about 12 miles. Too far? No problem make a day of it and stop off at one of the many pubs or call in at the Powderham Castle cafe for a cream tea – you’ve earned it.

Cycling is all about enjoying yourself and there’s nothing better than resting after a long ride, taking in the views, and sipping your drink and the peace and quiet... Heaven. Be sure to take advantage of the new cycle track (due for completion July 2011) to Dawlish and Cockwood.

Apart from a good selection of pubs with nice beers in Dawlish the highlights on the trail are: ‘The Ship’ or ‘Anchor’ at Cockwood, The Turf Locks Hotel on the Exeter ship canal and the Double Locks Hotel going towards the Exeter Canal Quay area.

As well as this you can take the ferry from Starcross to Exmouth or the pedestrian ferry (that

Most of the Exe trail is along an RSPB reserve and of particular interest are the Herons in the evening looking for their supper. The birds of prey gliding over the Exminster Marshes.
