GREAT DAY OUT AT PAIGNTON ZOO
WHERE you can you spend a whole, varied and exciting day and find something that will fascinate and enthral the whole family? Come along to the Three Great Attractions at Buckfastleigh and Totnes and you’re sure to find out!
Three Great Attractions – One Amazing Day is a joint initiative by Dartmoor Otters & Buckfast Butterflies at Buckfastleigh, the Totnes Rare Breeds Farm and, joining the two, the steam trains of the South Devon Railway – and you can buy great value joint tickets for all three!
The South Devon Railway is a beautiful branch line of the old Great Western Railway. Historic steam engines haul trains on a round trip, which lasts around an hour, between Buckfastleigh and Totnes along the valley of the River Dart, one of the most tranquil stretches of river in the South West, through countryside rich in wildlife.
There is loads more to do than just the train ride too. At Buckfastleigh, there is a riverside walk and picnic area, play area, gardens, a fascinating museum, a workshop and historic steam and diesel engines as well as a well stocked shop and refreshment rooms.
Dartmoor Otters & Buckfast Butterflies is adjacent to the SDR’s station. Here, you can wander around the otter sanctuary and butterfly farm and see new butterflies emerge in tropical surroundings and see the otters swimming underwater in specially built glass enclosures.
Down at Totnes, the SDR’s station is a short walk from the town. Across the line is the award-winning
Totnes Rare Breeds Farm, where you can experience at close quarters a wonderful collection of friendly animals and birds, from red squirrels and pygmy goats to a collection of endangered British wildlife.
The main car park is at Buckfastleigh or if you are travelling by train, the SDR’s Totnes station is about 500 yards from the mainline station.
