OFFICERS who live and work in Maidstone were among those that went out to Japan to help the earthquake rescue effort. Three technicians based in Sutton Road and a further fire- fighter, who lives in the county town, were part of a team of 59 UK fire service search and rescue specialists, two rescue dogs and a medical support team who flew out to the tsunami-stricken country. The deployment to Japan was funded by Department for Inter-
national Development (DFID) and did not impact on Kent Fire and Rescue’s Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) capability or availability to respond to other incidents.
