Children dressed as book characters LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Against polytunnels Dear Sir – I was so disappointed by the comments from M&S and Waitrose. I shop at both stores but I never buy their strawber- ries, firstly because I am totally against the polytunnels and sec- ondly they have no taste. We have lived in Hadlow for almost 50 years and cannot quite believe the change in the countryside around us. We used to be able to pick our

own strawberries, which were delicious, and this also gave some of the local residents help with their income. They were able to take their children along and spend a wonderful summer. We used to also help with the apple picking, which we thor- oughly enjoyed. One good bit of news is that a local farmer has planted a new

with music,andauthorAn- gela Love, who organised a competition for them. Therewas alsoaperform-

ance called “Rev It Up” by a group ofWest End actors. Literacy co-ordinator and assistant headteacher Lisa Penfold said:“Thetheme of theweekwaspicture books andthe childrenhavehada fantastic time.”

Pub quiz has answer YOUNGSTERS at Mereworth Primary School are grateful to a pub quiz night for solving their need for musical instruments. Money raised in the Swan On

The Green, West Peckham, en- abled the school to buy the per- cussion instruments. The old school house is being

redeveloped as a music room and library. Residents James MacDonald-Lister and Noly Sc- holey, organised the quiz.

orchard of young apple trees, so we look forward to seeing lovely apple blossom and ap- ples in the future. I wonder if Hugh Mowat from

M&S and Alan Wilson from Waitrose have ever driven down the A228 from East Peckham and looked at the countryside in front of them. I now call it Plastic City.

After shopping in Tunbridge Wells I used to drive along this road and think how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful part of Kent. Now it is violated by plastic

and most of the tunnels do not even use the soil; such a waste of good agricultural land. Some people say these tunnels are protecting our countryside and heritage - what rubbish. Let’s see more apple orchards,

Ditton alcohol sales Dear Sir - I read with interest the Ditton Council column in the latest Malling edition of Downs Mail. As one of the organisers of the

Turkey Run, I felt that the word- ing suggested that we had acted illegally regarding the sale of al- cohol at the 2010 event. The fact is that the alcohol

tent was provided by a com- pany called Eventful Beers, who

applied for and were awarded a licence to sell alcohol at the event. They primarily sold warm

cider to people who had com- pleted the race and spectators, and I do not believe they pre- sented any competition to the council’s own bar. We have apologised to the council regarding the unautho- rised erection of tents and the parking issues. Over the years we have raised money through this event, which has benefited some of the youth groups of Ditton, How- ever, as a result of these and other issues we are nowlooking at alternative venues for this event.
