Museum in hunt for Roman coins

SNODLAND Museum has moved a step closer to receiving its share of the rare Roman coins found in land owned by Smurfit Kappa Townsend Hook. The coins were found in 2006

when the company decided to excavate to find the soil types prior to selling the site for a housing development. On its first sweep, the digger

uncovered an ancient urn con- taining the coins. More than 4,000 coins were discovered and, under rules governing a treasure trove, the finder and the owner of the land each receive half of the value.

This total was £14,000 but

Smurfit Kappa has waived its right to the coins, leaving £7,000 needed to purchase the coins from the finder. The Snodland Partnership

has given £1,000 and museum curator Andrew Ashbee said it has £500 in its own funds. Andrew Richards, the com-

pany’s financial controller, said: “Townsend Hook has waived its right to the coins on the basis that they are housed at Snod- land Museum. “I have been dealing with Maidstone Museum and the British Museum to try to ensure that the artefacts remain local.
