Sports field goes to plan Nurses bid for

RESIDENTS at Kings Hill are a step closer to get- ting the sports facilities they were promised after plans were submitted for approval. Rouse Kent Residential Ltd is seeking permis-

sion to create five grass pitches and one floodlit artificial pitch at Heath Farm, to the north of Teston Road,Wateringbury. The proposals include two junior pitches and

three senior-sized fields, all suitable for hockey, football or rugby. A two-storey pavilion with changing rooms for teams, referees and officials, and parking for 170 cars are also planned. The developers are obliged to provide leisure facilities as part of planning permission granted in 1998. Controversial plans to create a football academy were dropped last year after Charlton Athletic

YOUNG Ronan Measor was preparing to splash out for charity by completing a hun- dred lengths in a sponsored swim. The 10-year-old, who lives

in Malling Road, Snodland, with his parents Jim and Mila, collected a total of £500 in pledges for the Swimathon at Larkfield Leisure Centre on April 9. Ronan, who has been a

keen swimmer since he was five, attends weekly lessons at the centre, and got the idea of taking part after reading about the event in the Downs

Community Trust pulled out. Residents were asked for their views on the new scheme, at Kings Hill Parish Council’s annual meeting. A “really inspiring adventure playground” and

picnic area was suggested by one mum, who said: “We need somewhere where people can come to- gether. I think that’s what we are missing in Kings Hill – that sense of community.” Kings Hill Football Club wants as many pitches

as possible and says that even with five, it would have to rely on the primary schools to keep all its teams going. The sports complex lies within the boundaries

of East Malling and Larkfield Parish Council who were considering the proposals on April 6. Kings Hill parish councillors were due to decide their stance on April 13.

aged to complete 80 lengths, but hoped to be ready for the 100 – a total of 2.5k, in time. Friends from St Kather-

ine’s School, Snodland, were invited along to cheer Ronan on in his efforts for Marie Curie Cancer Care. Ronan’s proud dad Jim, a supermarket driver, said: “He says he wants to be a swimming instructor one day. He just loves swim- ming, unlike his mum and me.We can’t swim.”

special chairs AN APPEAL to help oncology nurses at Maidstone Hospital raise money for extra comforts on thewardhas beenmade by one of their patients. Glenn Wood, of Midsummer

Road, Snodland, has been im- pressed by the fundraising efforts of staff who aim to buy recliner chairs for the infusion unit. The nurses have set up a char-

ity which has already provided portable DVD players for chemotherapy and haematology patients who spend up to 10 hours in one day receiving treat- ment.

Glenn, a groundsman with Rus-

setHomes, who is fighting cancer, said: “The patients are very well cared for and the staff do a won- derful job, but some people are in there for 10 hours and recliner chairs might help it to seem not such a long day for them. “The nurses are putting them-

selves out to help the patients and I thought it would be good to point out what they do.” Staff aim to buy 10 chairs, cost-

ing about £630 each. Donations, especially of prizes for the Easter raffle, would be welcome. The Christmas raffle raised around £1,000. Russet Homes has pledged the proceeds of one of its monthly charity Dress Down Fridays for the cause. If you canhelp, contact the unit on 01622 225099.
