Management takeover successful with support from Barclays Corporate
Work has started in preparation for the first phase of a state-of-the-art £116 million Marine Centre of Excellence (MCE) at the University of Southampton, where the university and Lloyd’s Register will work together in the largest research collaboration of its kind in the UK.
The new research hub, which will include a Maritime Institute, aims to redefine the relationship between academia and business and promote south Hampshire as a magnet for inward investment in the marine sector. Planning, design and environmental consultancy Terence O’Rourke coordinated the preparation and submission of a full planning application and led the public and stakeholder consultation, which included a dedicated consultation website. Key to the success of the application was the justification of a departure from the local plan, as the proposal introduced a business use into an area normally safeguarded for education.
To justify the departure, Terence O’Rourke promoted a clear understanding of the benefits of the synergy between Lloyd’s Register and
Live/work space event oversubscribed
City Champions were so keen to view the latest living and work spaces at Ocean Village that there was a waiting list for places at a recent Business Southampton event. Business leaders had the chance to see the live/work units at the Splash! development before heading to the adjacent Ocean Village Innovation Centre.
Managing director of Linden Homes Patrick Feighery explained the concept for the units harked back to the days of living over the shop: “The live/work units are ideal for entrepreneurs and give the opportunity to reduce the carbon footprint by having a work space and home together.“
Oxford Innovation has 17 centres across the UK, but the Southampton venture is the first to be wholly private-sector funded.

the university’s expertise in marine engineering and other marine and maritime disciplines. The planning application also explained the wider benefits of the MCE to Southampton, building on the city’s history of world-class maritime innovation.
Terence O’Rourke director Ann Bartaby commented: “The MCE is an incredibly important and exciting opportunity for Lloyd’s Register and the University of Southampton to work together side by side in the pursuit of world-class marine research and development.“
The new technology and education campus on the former Boldrewood Campus will accommodate staff and students from the university’s faculty of engineering and the environment, together with engineering and technical staff from Lloyd’s Register.
The project is due to be completed in 2014.
