Men’s clothing brand selects student’s photos for latest campaign
Photographs taken by a commercial photography student from the Arts University College at Bournemouth have been selected for the new spring/summer 2011 advertising campaign for men’s clothing brand Criminal.
Faith Mason’s images were selected from among those of six other students from the University College, to promote the high-profile brand. Launched from a bedroom in Bournemouth more than a decade ago and now a concession brand at House of Fraser, Criminal is renowned for its edgy, subversive attitude with the brand’s designers drawing inspiration from “street life and the revolutionary spirit of youth“.

THE BUSINESS MAGAZINE – SOLENT & SOUTH CENTRAL – MAY 2011
Commercial photography students were given garments
from the range and asked to arrange their own photo shoots, models and locations. Their brief was to update the image and move it forward as a more preppy, body-conscious brand in an innovative way. The images were then judged by House of Fraser professionals and a selection chosen for its website and for use in store.
Mason, whose ambition is to work in fashion photography, was thrilled to be chosen as the winner: “I’m so grateful for the opportunity. To be able to create something for Criminal is amazing and I’ve learnt so much from the whole experience.“ She also received a £500 House of Fraser voucher.
After the success of this competition for the second year running, the Arts University College at Bournemouth is hoping to run another photographic competition with Criminal during the next academic year. The winning images from this year’s competition can be seen on display in the window of the Bournemouth store.
Creative sector employment to be addressed by new venture
There was an impressive turn out for the launch of Solent Creatives, a new venture from Southampton Solent University, aimed at preparing students for the increasingly self-employed, entrepreneurial nature of employment in the creative sector.
Based in the Millais building, the new agency is equipped with the latest media tools and students are ready, willing and able to take on freelance assignments from businesses and organisations.
40 local businesses have signed up and will benefit from skills on offer including: logo design, copywriting, promotional support, film making, animation, illustration, market research, journalism, public relations, web design, social media, advertising campaign development and event management.
There is no formal charge to register and use the service, although they are expected to cover students’ expenses. Any additional remuneration is up to them.
