Hampshire County Council is launching a new innovative way to help tackle its budget deficit, by hiring out its unique venues to local businesses.

From a 120ft long Tudor barn to chapels, performance halls and traditional meeting rooms in the middle of the countryside, the county council wants to get better value from publically-owned buildings as part of its efficiency drive

As £3 million is being saved from the culture and recreation department budget, officers have decided to help generate some of the income needed to keep cultural sites running, by hiring out their spaces.

A new website has been created to promote what is on offer in a hope that it will generate much needed extra income: www.hants.gov.uk/hire. Venues can be found at sites such as Royal Victoria Country Park, Basing House, Aldershot Military Museum, Winchester, Gosport and Basingstoke Discovery Centres, Titchfield Haven, Hillier Gardens and many more.

As part of its efficiency programme to prepare for a 28% budget reduction during the next four years, the council is also taking further steps to minimise the impact on frontline services by investigating other income generation opportunities. These include increasing sales of its services to other authorities, such as HR, pay and contract support and property services.
