Corinne going over the course with McCall Koenig riding and Assistant Megan Hoeffliger

Max, her beloved dog

ordering everything, billing, lease agreements, and any general paperwork. The owners of the barn, the Mazess’ family, care about the horses as much as I do and I have great grooms who are as OCD as I am about cleaning and organization. At our barn we set up all the shoeing, chiropractic,

getting better about that though! Over New Years I took my first vacation in three years! What I miss about home is pretty basic. My own bed, Santa Barbara in general and my boyfriend. It’s a pretty ideal place to live!!

choose the supplement and feed program, show entries, as well as schedule vet appointments. And of course the teaching and riding part too! The owners ride three times a week and we usually school the horses 2 times a week. For me a big part of success is routine and consistency, so it is important to me to keep tabs on all the little details. I think one of the most important responsibilities I have

as a trainer is finding the right horse for the right rider. Riders have their strengths and I think finding a horse that compliments the rider’s style, as well as helps cover and compensate for any weaknesses the rider may have, is key when looking for horses. Sometimes it feels like it takes forever to find that special horse, but that time spent is well worth it!

SB: The best part of being in the horse business? CB: There are so many good parts of this business!! The horses, the kids getting excited about riding, watching them progress, the competitive part of it. I guess what it comes down to is it’s the best thing to be able to do some- thing you would want to do every day, even if it wasn’t your job!

SB: What do you miss about home when you are on the road? CB: I’m a bit of a control freak so I guess when I’m on the road I worry about what’s going on at the barn. I am

SB: Some things fun about you? CB: In high school I ran against my boyfriend for presi- dent of the student body. My slogan was,” Don’t be a Butthead vote for Bevis!! I won!!!

SB: Spare time, how do you spend it? CB: In the midst of the chaos of week two of thermal, my main groom Esteban gave me a tiny 5 week old puppy that had been rejected by his mother. The puppy takes up most of my free time and he loves to go to the beach!! One other weakness is shopping... I love clothes and

shoes so lots of rainy days are spent doing that!! Corinne adds, “It’s hard to hear from so many other

trainers that Santa Barbara used to be a huge horse show destination. When I hear that they used to have tempo- rary stalls in the parking lot and show till 11 pm and then in 2010 there were maybe 150 entries at the Turkey show, it’s sad!!” “Given that in the last 10 years so many local horse busi- nesses have grown I’d like to take that as a sign that the horse world is picking back up in the area. I would really love to see Earl Warren renovated and have Santa Barbara become a popular horse show location again.” “I am very content with where the business is right now,

I do think it would be fun to expand into more of the rated divisions. In the big picture, eventually I want to get married, have a family and then hopefully gain my amateur status back and show for fun.”
