closing out all distractions pays off. She has been described as having ice in her veins when it comes to the show ring and it would certainly take that on this day. In the first round, Jocelyn had the bad luck of dropping
a rail very late in the course. Audrey, going right before Cayla, did the same. Cayla, however, galloped around fault free and gained 10 precious points in the rankings. But that meant she would absolutely have to be clear in the jump off to take the available spot, otherwise she would be tied with Audrey. You could hear a pin drop around the ring as she entered, last to go. At times silence is golden and for Cayla, not a rail or a problem, she was clear and solidified the opportunity to represent her country in Leipzig!!!! “This is a tremendous opportunity for the United States,
and we are thrilled to assist with identifying the best and brightest young equestrians to represent our country in Leipzig. Getting this west coast rider on the Team speaks volumes for the west coast.” said Tom Sturzzieri. “The west coast has a deep pool of talented riders and I know Cayla Richards will make us all proud.” Lizzy Chesson, Director of Show Jumping USEF High
AO Jumper High, and Valentine, owned by Cayla, was Re- serve Champion. Taking both top circuit awards among the best of the Junior Jumper ranks is a pretty nice ending to a great six weeks. The most rewarding part of this story is just who Cayla
Richards is. With accomplishment after accomplishment she has managed to remain true to her character. She is a delightful, pleasant, and kind individual who has a thankful sincerity obvious to anyone who gets the chance to spend time with her. In spite of all the wins, and especially this milestone,
she remains humble and thankful. Her gratitude extends all the way from a special hug for her parents to a really BIG WOW AND THANKS. Acknowledging her appreciation to Far West Farms for the foundation of her riding and instilling the intense love for the horses she has, she is the epitome of what a horseman’s solid foundation can set the stage for in future success. Her respect for Ilan Ferder, her trainer, is palatable and
Performance Program, said, “It is a great opportunity for our young riders to qualify to compete Internationally against top riders of an equal age. This is a valuable step in helping to build our future International jumping riders.” To top off her qualifying success, she also accomplished
what few other have over the years. In the chase for points for 2011 Overall Desert Circuit Champion, her jumper Faustino, owned by Ilan Ferder, ended up Champion Jr/

real. In a very short time, he has taken her forward from the success in the Medal Class arena, to now the top of the Junior Jumper ranks. He is quiet, focused, demanding, kind, and steadfast in his belief of her abilities, and on oc- casion he almost gets a little misty eyed when her abilities take her to the top. As they go off to Europe and the EY-Cup SUPER FI-
NALS, we wish them luck and success. We thank the USEF for the opportunity for the west coast and will follow up next issue with the report on the trip.
