natural awakenings May 2011 9 SUBSCRIPTIONS Let us nurture each other well, Riley Reese
his year, my favorite month of May has blessed me with a water garden that I inherited with my new home and look forward to mothering. A chorus of frogs that has set up residence in the pond sing to us each night, fish flash their underwater colors, and sprouting water lilies will soon turn their flowery faces to the sunlight. It all reminds me of our role in stewarding the incredible beauty in this world, and I look forward to seeing the fruits of this labor of love in coming months. May also brings our special Women’s Wellness issue, honoring women every-
where who mother our world in infinite ways and care for the hopeful generations that follow us. When I looked up the term “motherly,” I found: to look after kindly and protectively; to nourish and nurture. We do well with such mothering and it is easy to see that anyone can embody these qualities. We have good reason to call our planet Mother Earth. I especially cherish the many women in my life who have stood by my side with
dedication, character and determination, teaching by their example what they are willing to do for those they love. Some taught me how to pursue what I really want in life. Others have served as a reliable pillar and touchstone through life’s adventures. From them I discovered how to mother my own daughter and am having fun passing along our combined legacy to my two granddaughters, toddler Riley and infant Reese. We know that women who spend
their days taking care of others some- times neglect key self-essentials of health and well-being. But, as many of us are finding, if we do not take care of ourselves and make the time to feel really good, how well will we be able to take care of others? These pages are here to help you
find natural ways to take care of your- self in body, mind and spirit. We are pleased to share helpful perspective and practical reasons to keep you on a
healthful track throughout your day. FYI, we also have an update on the new Natural Awakenings Network (NAN) discount card on page 21. We are currently securing the participation of many healthy and sustainable businesses in the Triangle who will be joining our national network of product and service providers offering ongoing discounts to readers who join as NAN members. If you frequent a healthy living or sustainable business where you would like to
receive a discount each time you make a purchase and don’t see them on the list, let them know that they need to be a part of NAN; we are adding new businesses daily.
NATriangle.com has details. In a future issue, we’ll explain how you can get a NAN Card for a modest membership fee and start receiving discounts at natural health and green living businesses here and around the country. Please join me this Mother’s Day, and all month long, in giving a bit of extra loving care to all the special women in your life.
