“Why do we have to study Shakespeare?” is one of the trickiest questions parents face, right up there with “where do babies come from?” and “are we nearly there yet?” Shakespeare’s Globe is an authentic recreation of the original Globe Theatre where the Bard’s plays were first performed. Theatre tours and access to the exhibition are available year-round, but for a real taste of how it felt to attend Elizabethan theatre, take in one of the summer-season productions starting in April. Advance tickets are recommended.
Of course it’s not necessary for kids to miss school for a family vacation – you can always go in the summer (a teacher made me say that). But if you do decide to give the little darlings a break from Mr. Grungeworthy’s Socials Class, London offers the perfect justification, combining fun and fascination, bringing “boring” books to life.
