After touring the Stolairus facilities with the Accountable Executive Keith Ander- sen, it became evident that out of this relatively small building comes some quite amazing technology. Stolairus acquired the assets of AOG Air Support in 2006 and has continued manufacturing and marketing various safety and performance modifications for the deHavilland DHC-2 Beaver & DHC-3 Otter. Though originally built as a Bush aircraft, many have been used in the military by the USA, Britain and Canada and flown in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. The Beaver and Otter aircraft are now essen- tial aircraft used by bush pilots in northern and rural regions all over Canada, USA and Australia. Known as STOL aircraft, these planes have the unique capability of a Short Take Off or Landing, eliminating the need for long concrete runways. It is because of this capability that it is impera- tive to not only maintain these aircraft, but also improve the way that they
operate. “The main purpose of the STOL kits”, Andersen explains, “is to improve on an already great airfoil by maintaining airflow under the wing and directing it to where it is needed most.” Once installed on the Beaver and Otter aircraft, the STOL kit adds a leading edge cuff to what was originally a flat wing. In addition to the cuffed wing, drooped wingtips and wing fences are installed, increasing the aircrafts lift by 30% and reducing stall speeds by the same figure. This is a major benefit when carrying heavier loads in and out of small lakes and outposts, which also increases the operator’s productivity. With Stolairus’ Beaver & Otter Upgross Kits, the DHC-2 Beaver’s weight capac- ity increases from 5,100lbs to 5,370lbs, while the DHC-3 Otter’s weight capacity increases from 7,967lbs to 8,367lbs and can go as high as 9,000lbs.
