Pegasus’ Fef steps down Pennies wins

THE highly acclaimed Pegasus gymnastics club, based in Crismill Lane, Thurnham, has a new di- rector. Head coach Ionut Trandaburu has been ap- pointed following the early retirement of Fef Grif- fin (pictured), the woman who founded the club in 1987. She has been suffering from ill health. A club statement said Fef had decided to pass

on the reins to "younger, but no less skilled, hands". She said she was leaving an excellent team of coaches at a club fit for London 2012 and beyond. The fact the Slovenian national squad will be using Pegasus as an Olympics training base re- flects the club's current standing. Its progress under Fef's directorship included

the first county championship medal, won by Karen Harris in 1988, and the development of the Pegasus Open competition, now a FIG calendar event at- tracting stars of the interna- tional circuit. "The list goes on and is tes- tament to the energy, enthusi- asm and dedication of Fef and the team of staff and coaches she has nurtured along the way," the statement added. Meanwhile, Ionut, who has received many regional and national awards, is one of the few coaches asked to deliver the British Gymnastics' Excel programme.

Eco survey halts development THE development of a new bungalow at the back of a property in Ware Street, Weavering, was put on hold for further advice on its effect on the area’s “green corridor”. The planning committee felt the application on land at The Re-

treat, close to the cul de sac end of Fulbert Drive, required deferral for an ecological survey as it is part of a recognised green route of back gardens running parallel with Weavering Street and linking up to adjacent woodland. Cllr Tony Harwood surmised that there might be a “slow-worm in every garden”. A previous application for a four-bedroom bungalow and double garage was refused in August last year due to potential over-inten- sification of the site, but the latest plan is for a two-bedroom bun- galow and single garage.
