Anger over new motorbike track

THE introduction of an unau- thorised motorbike track has been criticised by residents liv- ing near Lenham. Unsuspecting locals were shocked when 50 cars and vans arrived containing motorbikes for an eight-hour Sunday day- time biking session on a site at the junction of Sandway Road and Runham Lane, Sand- way.

Site entrance

Motorcycle racing can take place on land for up to 14 days a year without per- mission, but Maidstone Council has demanded a planning ap-

plication to validate the use of land. Applicant Park Valley Leisure Ltd has since submitted a proposal to set up amotocross circuit and parking area. Angela Wickens, of nearby Headcorn Road, said: “Some- one bought the field and the next thing you know there are JCBs all over the place for a large event “I will be objecting on the grounds of noise and the lack of parking. The road is too narrow. People were parked on the side of Sandway Road and itmade it difficult for anyone to get through. It’s not the sort of place to have a big thing like that. It hastobeplacedoffamain road.” Lady Monckton, of nearby Runham Farm, claimed the noise was “unbearable”.

of Greenway Court Road, at the junction with Hospital Lane. The parish council previously considered the matter in September 2010 when another quad bike event prompted complaints. How- ever, planning law states that land can be used for temporary uses without requiring planning permission, regardless of the number of persons attending. In the case of motor sports, this can be for a maximum of 14 days per calendar year. PCSO Nicola Morris has promised to investigate further. Police

may be able to intervene if the sheer volume of people presents a highway safety issue. Maidstone Council’s environmental health team could investigate noise nuisance matters.

Knocking spots off beauty competition

BEAUTY contestant Chelsea Court- ney is dotty about her nan’s blue and white spotted dress. So much so that the Lordswood resident wore the vintage outfit when she lined up in the regional heat of the Miss England competi- tion.

Chelsea needed to model some-

thing recycled as part of the contest. So she chose the polka dot dress which her grandmother Barbara Asquith (72) wore at one of her six weddings. Chelsea, who attended Aylesford

Sport College and works as a con- cession manager in Topshop, Maid- stone, was looking forward to being photographed in a range of outfits, including thewedding dress, in the south east heat at Guildford. Pictures of the contestants were

being posted on the Miss England website for voters to choose their favourite, with the top five going forward to the semi-finals in June.
