fore an application is submit- ted, councillors heard, as there is an ongoing issue with Maid- stone Council over the legal sta- tus of the site. However, land owner Mal-

colm Hill seems happy with what is proposed, said Cllr Pat Sandford, of the parish's plan- ning sub-group. Parish council vice-chairman

PeterWaite said the proposal is from an established firm that decorates and does sign writing on cars and other vehicles. On a

visit, he saw a car completely covered in a vinyl finish that was "quite striking". He said there would normally

be misgivings about a vehicle operation as they tend to be noisy and smelly. "This particular application

isn't," said Cllr Waite. But the concern may be that once there is an established use for vehicle activity it could lead on to serv- icing and repairs. He said the company was pre-

pared to make a "very large in- vestment" and completely rebuild the asbestos-roof build- ing, which was recently the sub- ject of a church's plan to hold services and meetings there,

FOUR senior councillors are standing down after many years of service to the community. Cllr Pat Sandford, who is in his mid-80s, has decided to call it a day after 35 years in local gov- ernment "on and off". He has served on two parish councils, Thurnham and Aylesford, as well as the county council. He said it would be a "wrench" giving it up. Cllr Richard Jacques, a former chairman, said

he would not be standing either. Until last year he was also chairman of the Joint Parishes Group that fought the KIG scheme at a lengthy public in- quiry.

which has since been dropped. Landscaping and environmen- tal improvements are part of the latest proposal. Current proposals retain a similar footprint for the build- ing but an alternative of a smaller unit with a new de- tached house is being consid- ered. The house would retain the existing entrance, with a new entry for the business. Cllr Sandford said: "On the

face of it, it's going to clean up a rather ugly site. It looks like a planning gain.” But he added that planning

gains usually have a down side, picking up Cllr Waite's point about possible future uses.

More councillors needed after departures

Cllr Anna Bloomfield is also stepping down, because of other commitments. Cllr John Horne, a former Maidstone mayor, earlier told the meeting that he would not be standing in the May borough council elections. Parish councillors agreed to send a letter thank- ing him for all his work over the past 30-plus years. The parish council agreed there is a need to re-

cruit new members both to replace retiring ones and to introduce new ideas. The clerk was asked to mail all electors to invite candidates for elec- tion.
