New police vision

Continued from page one The existing six command units - one is Maidstone and Swale

- are being reorganised into just three -West Kent, East Kent and North Kent &Medway. The changes will be implemented by the end of this year. Ch Supt Nix, who will runWest Kent, said the new set-up "is

going back to what we used to do" on proactive policing. "You own the patch, you own all of the problems - crime, anti-social behaviour, community engagement - you own the lot. "It will take us a little time to get our heads back round that

but when I had a beat, when I first joined nearly 26 years ago, I owned that patch and I took it personally if something happened on that patch. "We have that in pockets now; we have certainly got that in neighbourhood policing, and the idea is this will enhance that even further.” He believes that "front-line ownership" is crucial. Ch Supt Nix will be responsible for Maidstone, Tonbridge & Malling, Sevenoaks and TunbridgeWells. He said: “Maidstone will stay as a custody centre and patrol

centre and it will enhance its neighbourhood capability. “It will also have detectives - the crime groups - based at Maid-

stone. "It's not yet defined but I have a view that Maidstone is the di- visional headquarters. This will be the centre of operations for west division. It's the busiest, it's the biggest. The County Town needs to be the divisional HQ,” he added

Rotary gets chairs for dementia centre

THE Rotary Club ofMaidstone Riverside has donated five chairs to the new Goodman Dementia Centre run by Age Concern in Bearsted. The centre, which was opened in July 2010, can ac- commodate up to 20 clients per day and is open Monday to Friday. It is managed by a qualified nurse and a further four staff

plus volunteers, and is open to anyone within the borough of Maidstone. Clients can attend for six

hours and have the option to travel by minibus. President of the Rotary Club,

Peter Bodycombe, who is also a volunteer driver for Age Concern, chose the charity as one of his nominated local beneficiaries during his year.

Lenham school’s sporting cheer

PUPILS from Lenham Primary School had a double cause for celebration as they excelled in two different sports.

The football team (left, top) represented Kent against rep- resentatives from Hertford- shire, Essex and Sussex in the English Schools FA small schools final at the Marathon Sports Ground, Greenwich. Lenham won two, drew two

and lost two, qualifying with Herts to represent South East of England in the finals atWat- ford academy onMay 21. The team was Ollie Beer,

Luke Bragg, Louis Costello- Wright, Taylor Dean, Owen Gray, Kieran Jenkins, Elliott Homes (captain), Reece Shep- hard and Luke Smith. The swimming team (left, bottom) came first out of 15 schools in the Maidstone Schools Swimming Gala at Maidstone Leisure Centre. Lenham took eight pupils who swam in two relay races and four individual races.

Resubmission of garden application APPLICANT Sharen Cain has made another attempt to retrospectively change agricultural land into a domestic garden at Thornbury, Lenham Heath Road. Maidstone Council decided last October that the original proposal would “result in harm to the appearance and character of the open countryside through the erosion of the open-ness of the rural loca- tion and the proliferation of domestic paraphernalia,” and so con- trary to policies. The revamped plan would reduce the garden extension so that a

pond remainswithin the field and see the introduction of a hedge on the eastern boundary. The council will once again rule on the application.
