Based on the southern tip of Tenerife enables Club Yachting to either sail west to La Gomera or east to Gran Canaria.

Gran Canaria is the most southerly island in Europe (El Hierro is the most westerly) and has nearly 60 km of beaches and a coast line of 236 km with the same great weather of Tenerife. Away from the tourist areas of Puerto Rico there are quiet beaches and great scenery for example the small sea enclave of Agaete, the perfect getaway spot for those who wish to leave rush behind.

Originally in Spanish Gran Canaria means “Great Island of Dogs”, and is the second most populated island of the canaries after Tenerife.

Originally populated by the Canarii as early as 500 BC it was known as Tamaran or The Land of the Brave.

After over a century of invaders it was  nally captured by Queen Iasabella of Spain in 1483.

In the autumn months many boats  nd that Gran Canaria is a great stopping off island for repairs or to stock up

before heading out across the Atlantic - many joining in the world famous ARC.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (the capital of the island) houses the majority of the ARC yachts as it has the largest Marina in the Canary Islands.

The  shing harbour of Puerto de Las Nieves is the closest harbour to Tenerife, and the stopping of point for the high speed ferries.

On the more sheltered southern coast are the harbours and marinas of Puerto de Mogán, Puerto Rico, An del Mar (with its white Caribbean sand), Puerto Arguineguín ( p r ima r i l y a

When you travel inland you see the diverse land- scape and micro- climate of the island - which makes up the national park - which has been awarded the UNESCO B i o s p h e r e Reserve label.

Gran Canaria climbs to an altitude of 300 metres with an arid interior  lled with thistle and euphorbia.

At the bottom of ravines and valleys are palm trees, salt cedar and willow groves.

While sailing around the coast line you will see loggerhead turtles; whilst between Tenerife and Gran Canaria you will come across pilot whales, bottlenose dolphin and the Risso’s dolphin.
